New toys

I forgot to post this – a bit of play with some new wax crayons. I´ve been wanting some real quality wax crayons for a while, and I finally invested in (or wasted money on, depends on how you look at it) a box of Caran d´Ache Neocolor I a few weeks ago. This drawing is me comparing the Neocolor crayons with the really old cheapo crayons I had before (cheapo on the left, Neocolor on the right).

The difference isn´t so much in the image as in my wrist. The left image was really hard work, the cheapos don´t really want to leave colour on the paper – probably because they´re mostly wax and not so much pigment – while the Neocolors just smeared on like butter. Wonderful!

17 x 13 cm, Faber Castell Smart crayons and Caran d´Ache Neocolor I crayons on sketchbook page.

yeah, there’s more richness of color in the new ‘not a waste of money’ crayons!

Lovely rich tones in the new crayon.

Wax crayons are so hard to control but the colors are just so vibrant! Really nice one, and makes me want to get a bottle of Kikkoman soy sauce myself :)

I bought my first tin of Neocolors about 30 years ago… a major outlay with my student’s allowance. They are now short and stubby and I replaced them with a new box a year or so ago – I think they’re a great investment!

I like the one on the right because the colors are better. I think I may have to see about getting some of these crayons!

Great blog! Love the comparison! I have the Carand’ach neocolor 11 watersoluble pastels. They were recomended by a watercolor instuctor as the best! I’ll have to give them another try!
    Continued success!

I love the Caran d’Ache crayons, too! I’ve been using them for 30 years (!), since I found out about them in art college. They are fabulous and come in such a wide range of colors!
You are going to do wonderful things with them—you already have!

I’ve never tried wax crayons (well, not since my primary school ‘Crayola’ years!)

They’re both brill drawings. Your investment seems a worthwhile one though as they look to blend more easily.

This is interesting. I really like Neocolor II crayons, but I’ve never tried the wax crayons. I like your drawings with these! The color is so rich!
