Bus ride

bussresa

Just a quick one from a bus ride I did recently with my niece Elsa. “Rasta” may refer to rastafari in Swedish too, but it is also a verb for “taking a break”, plus the name of a restaurant along the E4. Many coaches stop there on their journeys through Sweden. We had a “Today´s special pasta”.

16 x 19 cm, Lamy Safari and Faber Castell Polychromos on Fabriano Rosapina printing paper (sketchbook page).

Nice expressions.. Thanks for explaining what ‘rasta’ means in Swedish.. Well, coincidence or not, ‘rasta’ means ‘route’ or ‘way’ in Hindi.. and that was also fitting in with your sketch ;o) So I was surprised when I saw the word there – like as though this world is so so small, and as though we all are really one (I know that’s a whole diff angle of philosophy!!)

I may have said this before but really, your sketches are always a delight

It always amazes me when someone can do such wonderful work while in a moving vehicle. The smooth lines and all the detail – what a wonder!! nancy

I love hearing about your country. Please post more of these delightful “travelogues” that make me want to pack up a head your way…

Is pasta/Italian food common cuisine in Sweden? Is there a population of Italians in Sweden? My family was in the restaurant business for many years. I learned all about Italian cuisine when my mother remarried an Italian man, the pair opened their first restaurant in Coastal California, Italian food, of course…still one of my favorites to eat and to cook.

    • Yes, pasta and other Italian food is quite popular here too, and Stockholm has quite a few Italian restaurants. Of course there are Italians here, but I couldn´t begin to guess how many, or if they could be called “a population”… I think quite a few Italians probably moved to Sweden in the sixties-seventies, along with a lot of Greeks and Spanish people, since Sweden had a huge need for manpower then.

Nina I was looking at your exhibition pics this evening and noticed you have no mounts around your paintings just frames. Are they under glass or have you varnished them?
The exhibit looked fabulous btw!!! I hope it went well for you.

    • Hi Anita, sorry for slow response here, I´m catching up!
I didn´t use glass, frames or passepartouts in my exhibition, no varnish either. The white borders around the paintings is just where I masqued the paper with tape while painting. I mounted the paintings on cardboard backing, with strips of wood on the backside for sturdiness. I sort of counted on the visitors NOT to pour water on my paintings, and thought the watercolours should be able to stand the tiny amount of UV light that comes into the exhibition room during one month, so I didn´t work too hard on protection. Both because I think it looked beautiful with the naked paper against the walls, and because glass and frames on all 29 paintings would have been my ruin…

  9. Hi Nina..as usual, your drawing is just fantastic!
I also went through your whole exhibition paintings and your preparation for the show and the exhibit itself… I hope it was a huge success and by the sound of it, it sure was! You deserve it, your work is REALLY all beautiful, unique and so well done. And what a wonderful theme it was. Congratulations! So sorry I didn’t follow it while it was happening…there is something hypnotic about the excitement of an exhibition. But I hope I can be there with you on your next journey.
    bisous

Great drawing – once again! I’ve done similar drawings in planes, though not as good, and I can truly appreciate yours!

Heh – just saw your kind response to my comment on the “Elsa” post. My drawings were never posted because they are experiments, and they look like experiments. When my mixing of the chemicals stops blowing up the laboratory, then you will see some drawings of that type! Thanks!
